What makes you decide to read a blog at your first glance of an unknown blogger? Your mind subconsciously applies a set of filters to make that decision. So, let us look at some of the common filters. First being very obvious, what is the title of the blog? Whether it is of my interest or not? Second, what is the read time? How much time will I have to dedicate to read it? The third filter could be what is the author’s profile? What does he or she do? After applying these filters your mind decides whether it wants to go ahead further reading it or not.

Some people may use only one or two of such filters while others may have many more filters for make a selection. The filters may vary from person to person. Also, this filtering is done by your mind within a fraction of seconds, so at time you might be unaware about it. With the advance in technologies and shorter turnaround time in the getting expected results our patience and attention span is dwindling. We want to achieve more in less time with minimal effort. So the question arises how to catch reader’s attention and keep him glued to your blog till the end? Keeping your blog lengthy won’t help you specially if you are a new blogger and have no followers yet. The first step is build your rapport as an interesting blogger. I came up with two things which new bloggers should consider before hitting the publish button.

(1). To keep the read time of your blog less than 8 minutes and if the article length goes beyond that then split it into a series rather than publishing a single lengthy article.

(2). If for any reason your are unable to split the long blog into a series, could be due to lack of time or any other reason. Dedicate one section as a summary of the article which will convey the reader your message at a glance.

The more precise and crisp you keep your blog the more your blog will clear the reader’s filtering criteria and hence resulting in more reads. Happy Blogging :)
